Our School

and other useful information

Our School

We are a large Infants' School which in 2002 moved into a brand new state of the art building on the outskirts of Riverhead Village.  We have 270 children on our roll aged from 4½ to 7 years old.

Our school has an exciting futuristic design.  The roof of our school has sedum on it - its colour is constantly changing throughout the year from green to pink and purple; click on the picture for a larger view.  Inside there is plenty of space for our nine classes, hall, ICT suite, library and offices.

The School is set in its own grounds.  At the back of the school, away from the noise of the A25, we have a large playing field, playground and environmental area.  Next to us are; a cricket ground, parkland and fields which sometimes have ponies grazing in them.

Please take time to explore our website which contains a lot more information about us.  We have a tour to show you of what our school looks like, work from our children, latest news and letters, a section covering frequently asked questions, school prospectus, information about our PTA and Governors and much more...

Walk to School Initiative

Riverhead Infants' School has a strong Walk to School culture which has developed as the School implemented its first Travel Plan late in 2000 before the school moved to its new location.

In order to gain planning permission for the new school, Riverhead Infants' School had to commit to reduce its school generated traffic by 15% within 5 years.  In order to comply with this the school developed a walk to school campaign to encourage all its families to leave the car at home and walk as much as possible.

The most important walk to school initiatives are:

  • » Establishing three walking buses which collect children from three different areas of the village and escort them into school by 8.50 am every morning.
  • » Encouraging all families to walk to and from school as much as possible.  If the journey is too long then families are encouraged to park in one of the nearby public car parks and walk the remainder of the journey.

In 2005 the school published a new Travel Plan in order to apply for a grant from the Department of Transport.  A new travel survey showed that around 80% of children walked all or part of the way to school, to put this in context about 45% of families used to walk to school before the Walk to School Initiative was introduced in 2000.  Click here to view the current Travel Plan.

Ofsted Reports

The most recent Ofsted inspection was in January 2009.  A summary is available below.

The school was previously inspected by Ofsted in May 2000 and again in January 2006.

Full copies of the inspection reports can be supplied by the School Office, or are available in PDF from the Ofsted website for May 2000. Jan 2006 and Jan 2009

Ofsted Inspection January 2009 : Summary

This school is outstanding.  The academic performance of the pupils in reading, writing, mathematics, science and information and communication technology (ICT) is exceptional.  The vibrant curriculum gives pupils very good opportunities for developing their creative, practical and sporting talents.  From the minute they set foot in the school, pupils are nurtured and receive exceptional levels of care.  This is a significant reason why their personal development, including their behaviour, is outstanding and they love coming to school and learning.  The talented and greatly committed staff have high expectations and prepare pupils extremely well for learning and adult life.  The vast majority of parents justifiably see the school in a very favourable light and one expressed the views of many, saying
'My child rushes to school every morning with sheer excitement about what a new day will bring; fantastic teachers, fantastic school!'
